Dear Ladies and Gents-

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your support and encouragement.

It has been more than 30 years since most Cambodian came ashore to America. Many of us have accomplished so much professionally and personally. The only area where we are lagging behind is the political arena. The Vietnamese has a Congressman and couple of State Representatives and State Senators in California. In 2010, they will have at least one more Congressman from California!

We Cambodians, together, we can and will make history on September 14, 2010 when I win the GOP Primary. My messages and positions are resonating with the people of the fifth district. I am campaigning hard. I am working 16 hours a day. I resigned from position with State Street Global Advisors to campaign full time. I did so that we Khmers can be proud of our rich culture. So that we have a voice of representation in Congress. So that our Khmer children and grandchildren will have a positive role model just as Barack Obama is to Black children. Once I am elected to Congress, I can do much for our community across the USA.

But to get my message out to the people of the fifth district, I need money to do mailings, advertising and to pay for professional campaign staff. I have a lot of volunteers, I need paid professional to manage the volunteers. I feel that we can and will win this election on September 14 and November 2. Campaign costs a lot of money. All politicians in America raise money from Americans to run for office.

We gradually are coming together. But time is of the essence. I only have four months left before the primary (September 14) to raise $1.5 millions to wage a viable campaign. I have a goal to raise $150,000 in the month of June 2010. I am raising these monies from all sources;
not just from Cambodian Americans. This $150,000 goal is very important. All eyes, across the nation, are on my campaign finance report for period ending June 30. When we raised this amount, it will blow away all of my competitors in the GOP!

Imagine, if 15,000 Cambodian Americans donate just $30/month per person for the next six moths – that just $1/day, I will have more money to run a formidable campaign. There are nearly one millions Cambodian living in the US today.

Let’s come together and unite. Let’s put aside our political difference here in the US, Democrat & Republican, and Srok Khmer. Let’s focus on our collective interest – to elect the first Cambodian American to Congress!

I need your help–your financial contribution. Your contribution to my campaign is an investment in our future and the future of Cambodians
in Srok Khmers.

Will you please donate today via www.sammeasforcongress.com

All the Very Best,
Sam Meas

As a Khmer college student or alum, you may have occasionally wondered what you can do in your spare time to contribute to the welfare of Cambodia in some way. This is an opportunity to get involved with a growing non-profit organization that works with rural children in the village of Chrauk Tiek, in the Cardamom Mountains, a few hours northwest of Phnom Penh.

Sustainable Schools International (SSI) is run by Kari Grossman, a woman from Colorado with an adopted Cambodian son. She is also the author of “Bones That Float, A Story of Adopting Cambodia.” Her organization’s mission is to help impoverished communities to help themselves and eventually become completely self-sustaining. This is different from many other non-profits that focus on raising funds or building schools but don’t follow up with long-term support for
teachers, facilities maintenance, and other things the students need to achieve their educational goals.

SSI’s elementary school in Chrauk Tiek has been recognized by the Cambodian government as a model for the whole province. The organization plans to expand its work to two more rural schools, providing access to education for more than 700 primary and secondary-level students. SSI would also like to establish service learning and travel programs to raise awareness and connect U.S. schools with Cambodian ones.

Given these ambitious goals, SSI is looking for board members to join its team remotely. Those majoring in education, public administration, marketing/communication (especially social media), social work, finance/management, international relations, or (Southeast) Asian studies are the most likely to gain relevant experience, but anyone may apply.

The time commitment is a minimum of 20 hours a month, with monthly two-hour phone conferences and two in-person meetings in Colorado per year (may be negotiable for those on a student budget). Please see the attached description of board member duties by committee.

Send resumes with a brief cover letter explaining your interest and potential contribution to Kari@SustainableSchoolsInternational.org,

or visit www.sustainableschoolsinternational.org for more information.

O! MAHA MOUNT DANGREK: Poetry of Cambodian Refugee Experiences

Khmer & English Edition

“Here was a treasure trove of eyewitness memories, at once personal and historical, of the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime”, commented Samkhann Khoeun, who is an editor, translator and publisher of the Cambodian refugee poetry book.

The poems contained in this first ever bilingual Cambodian refugee poetry book lay dormant for nearly three decades, hidden among the meager possessions of the late Venerable Ly Van, former Abbott of Glory Buddhist Temple in Lowell, MA. His poignant renderings were accidentally discovered at the temple on the very day of the late monk’s passing away on January 12, 2008. Venerable Ly Van worked through his trauma by summoning his creativity and documenting his personal experiences, as well as those of his dearest friend and U.S. sponsor, Sovann Chea, in poetry form. Venerable Ly Van’s devotion to Buddhist traditions allowed him to make peace with himself and the world, despite the ordeal he experienced and witnessed during this tragic period of Cambodian history. The peace he had achieved in his own heart radiated to others in a very special way through his role as a monk at Glory Buddhist Temple in Lowell, Massachusetts.

There will be two apprenticed artists, Ms. Srey Peou Phoeun and Mr. Sinat Nhok, who are trained with the Cambodian Living Arts in Phnom Penh, Cambodia in traditional poetry, smot chanting and Khmer instrument, visiting the U.S. in order to participate in poetry readings and smot at various Cambodian communities around the country. The two artists/students will perform traditional Khmer poetry, chanting, smot and ritual music, which are not commonly heard or performed in the Cambodian American communities across the United States of America. This will be a unique cultural experience for many Cambodian Americans, especially for the Cambodian American youth and others.

The overall goals of this Cambodian Poetry & Smot Project is both to celebrate Khmer arts and to bring about healing and reconciliation to the Cambodian American community members across the U.S.A., The Project’s aim is to also help bring peace to the Cambodians still living in their native country who have experienced the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge that is often referred to as the Killing Fields, which began on April 17, 1975.. The Poetry & Smot Project tour was planned to coincide with the Extraordinary Chamber of Court in the Cambodia (ECCC), which is the International Tribunal responsible for prosecuting the most senior Khmer Rouge leaders that is currently taking place in Cambodia.

We hope that Cambodian students will share their Khmer traditions and artistic skills, as well as gain firsthand experiences from the Cambodians in Diasporas across the country; learning about their life stories including challenges and successes, and finding long overdue peace from the many injustices suffered by their lost relatives and also healing for their surviving loved ones. The power of authentic Khmer poetry, smot, unique ritual and ancient Khmer music will enable, inspire and empower the Cambodian Americans to overcome their daily challenges in raising their Americanized children to be more appreciative of their parents’ and grandparents’ history of struggle, survival, and the sacrifices they made during their long dangerous journey in order to provide safety and freedom to their children in America!
